The Armoury sports science program is a 1 of a kind program using science athletes to train smarter and reach the next level of performance. The program is designed to objectively measure athletic performance including lean muscle and fat body composition, VO2 max and anaerobic threshold, sports biomechanics, nutrition and mental performance. Once the data is compiled a custom training program is developed for the athlete.
The initial step is a medical assessment with a sports medicine physician. This will include discussing goals for the athlete, previous injuries and current injuries. A general physical and musculoskeletal exam will be a part of this assessment. Imaging including x-ray, CT, MRI could be used to help with determining musculoskeletal pain. Performance blood work will be used to assess deficiencies that affect performance.
The DEXA body composition scan is a gold standard test to measure the percentage of the muscle mass, percentage body fat, and bone density. The analysis can be further broken down to compare right and left arms, right and left legs and trunk area. For those athletes who require muscle hypertrophy in the lower limb versus the upper limb, this test will be able to compare the difference in detail down to the gram. The test also calculates the resting metabolic rate which is the amount of calories burned on a daily basis without any activity.
VO2 max test is used to measure energy systems while exercising.
The metabolic tests will measure physiological performance during a graded exercise test. The body’s metabolic demand for energy changes during exercise, which is measured through out the test. The V02 is calculated as every calorie consumed requires a fixed amount of oxygen to be converted to energy. This is the measure of the rate of oxygen use directly related to caloric expenditure
Anaerobic threshold (AT) is the level of exercise beyond which lactic acid begins to accumulate in the muscles during anaerobic metabolism. This is when the athletes starts to fatigue which relates to reduced performance. AT is accurately measured as The Armoury uses a device to measure carbon dioxide which is directly related to the AT
This is performed by a naturopathic doctor that specializes in nutrition. It will be comprised of a dietary assessment, assessing macro and micronutrients. It will look at gastrointestinal absorption and microbiome analysis. Macronutrient testing will assess calories, carbohydrates, protein, fats, and fiber. The micronutrients testing will test for vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and antioxidants. Sophisticated computer analysis will determine appropriate nutritional deficiencies and recommend foods for athletic performance. The overall nutritional plan will consistently manage caloric intake, use anti-inflammatory supplementation, glucose management, cardiovascular management. Sports performance nutraceuticals will be recommended using high-quality supplementation such as Thorne.
Sports chiropractor will conduct a biomechanical assessment of the athletic movement for their particular sport. Trunk rotation, limb movement, the technique related to their sport will be assessed in detail. Further recommendations for creating increased velocity, increased stability, specific training on their sport will be recommended.
Dynavision is a device that can measure reaction time, peripheral vision, concentration and focus. A baseline test will be completed. Training on this device can improve on-field awareness and enhanced performance.
